Walking The Somme

Cologne

5-Day Break

  • Day 1 – We arrive at our hotel in Amiens for a four-night stay.
  • Day 2 – Beaumont Hamel and Thiepval (included). Walk 1: Our walk begins in Auchonvillers to see the cemetery and site of the Dressing Station, then to Hawthorn Ridge. We examine the fighting for Beaumont Hamel on 1st July 1916 and end at Newfoundland Park, with its preserved trenches. Walk 2: Beginning at Blighty Valley Cemetery, we walk past Authuille Wood to the front lines. We then see Thiepval Memorial and visit the new Visitors Centre. B
  • Day 3 – Mametz Wood and Death Valley (included). Walk 3: We visit Mametz Wood, see Dantzig Alley Cemetery and the memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division, then walk to Flat Iron Copse Cemetery and end at Bazentin-le-Petit. Walk 4: We walk from Bazentin to High Wood, via Crucifix Corner, to the London Cemetery. We then follow the infamous Wood Lane down to Longueval. B
  • Day 4 –Morning at Mouquet Farm and Courcelette (included). Walk 5: We walk between Mouquet Farm and Courcelette. Next, we visit the Sunken Lane and the site of a former German cemetery. Afternoon at leisure or Pozieres (optional). On the Pozieres battlefield we study the role of the Australians in 1916 and see the Pozieres Memorial to the Missing and Cemetery, 1st Australian Division Memorial, Gibraltar Bunker and the site of the Windmill. We later retire to Longueval for an evening meal. B
  • Day 5 – We journey to Calais, then return home. B

Accommodation
You'll stay for four nights at the 3-star Novotel Amiens Est located 7km from the centre of Amiens. The hotel has a restaurant and bar. The hotel has two floors and does not have a lift, although there are bedrooms on the ground floor. All bedrooms have a T.V., telephone, hairdryer and air-conditioning.
