BATTLEFIELD TOURS

Armistice Day In Normandy

Cologne

4-Day Break

  • Day 1 – We travel to Caen for a 3-night stay.
  • Day 2 – Merville Battery and The American Sector (included). Merville Battery, with its 4 huge concrete casemates, was made to defend the coastline and hinder an invasion from Sword Beach. We'll hear the haunting story of how the battery was heroically disarmed by the 9th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, under Lt. Colonel Terence Otway in the early hours of 6th June 1944. We visit the superb museum, which is housed in casemate number 1. In the afternoon, we explore the American Sector, visiting Ste Mère Église, where the American paratroopers dropped in the middle of the burning town. We also see Utah Beach and the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. B
  • Day 3 – Armistice Day (included). Following the progress of the British 6th Airborne Division, we visit Pegasus Bridge, scene of the dramatic 'coup de main' operation when Major John Howard and his men took this vital bridge over the Caen Canal, just after midnight on 6th June 1944. Next, we visit the country village of Ranville and attend an intimate Remembrance Day Ceremony at Ranville Cemetery, where so many of the casualties of the early stages of the invasion were laid to rest. After paying our respects, we continue alongside the British and Canadian landing beaches of Sword, Juno and Gold, hearing the story of the only Victoria Cross winner on D-Day, CSM Stan Hollis. We end the day at Bayeux with an opportunity to visit the Bayeux War Cemetery. B
  • Day 4 – We travel to Calais for our return journey home. B
